ADL concludes its 'Glossary of Extremism' after categorizing Charlie Kirk's TPUSA as 'extremism' and 'hate'

ADL Cancels Extremist Glossary After Backlash

The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) has decided to discontinue its glossary of extremist groups and individuals. This decision was announced on Tuesday evening, marking the end of a list that contained over 1,000 entries aimed at providing insights into various topics over the years.

The organization admitted that the glossary had become outdated, mentioning that many entries were intentionally “misrepresented and misused.” They noted that the growing number of entries was no longer manageable.

The ADL now plans to focus on researching and “exploring new strategies and creative approaches” to combat anti-Semitism and hatred.

Recently, the ADL faced considerable criticism when it labeled Charlie Kirk’s organization, Turning Point USA (TPUSA), as a hate group. The ADL’s website categorized TPUSA under tags such as “extremism” and “hatred,” citing the organization’s connections to far-right conspiracy theories.

Charlie Kirk’s connections with the ADL’s labeling have sparked significant backlash. Notably, Elon Musk, the founder of Tesla, has publicly criticized the ADL, referring to it as a “hate group” and a “hatred propaganda machine on the far left.”

Musk also accused the ADL of “selling hatred” and made remarks suggesting that the organization harbors animosity towards Christians. His comments followed a post that intended to challenge the ADL’s description of the Christian Identity Movement, which is also listed as “extremism, hatred, or terrorism.”

ADL describes the Christian Identity ideology as prevalent in extreme right-wing circles, promoting beliefs that are deeply racist and anti-Semitic, usually entwined with intense anti-government sentiments.

In response to the criticism, Musk has urged that the ADL change its approach. Following this oversight, the ADL did adjust some language in its description of TPUSA, though changes appeared to be limited. The organization reduced the phrasing around TPUSA promoting conspiracy theories.

The now-defunct glossary included various groups labeled as extremist, along with TPUSA and the “America First” movement, but notably excluded organizations like Antifa and Black Lives Matter.
