Durbin withdraws support for Cardinal Cupich award following Catholic backlash

Sen. Dick Durbin Rejects “Lifetime Achievement Award” from Cardinal Cupich

Senator Dick Durbin, who has long supported abortion rights, has decided against accepting a “lifetime achievement award” from Cardinal Blase Cupich amidst pushback from Catholic bishops and community leaders in Chicago.

Durbin communicated his choice to Kapitch, who expressed disappointment but respected the senator’s decision. “While I am saddened, I want to emphasize that honoring him would have recognized his vital work in immigration reform and his enduring commitment to the cause,” she stated.

This award was initially met with significant backlash, as Catholic groups launched a petition at the Catholic Boat Action Center. This move led to a surge of over 40,000 signatures within just a couple of days, urging Durbin not to accept the honor.

Kelsey Reinhardt, the president of Catholic Vote, underscored the significance of Durbin’s decision, noting that the protests, spurred on by the petition, demonstrated widespread dissent against honoring a pro-abortion figure. Supporters planned a peaceful protest outside the upcoming Keep Hope Alive Benefit, an event where the award was supposed to be presented.

The event was organized by the Ministry of Human Dignity and Solidarity and would take place at St. Ignatius University Prep in Chicago. Most notably, the response involved at least ten bishops opposing the award, including Bishop Thomas J. Paprocki from Springfield, Illinois.

Concerns were also voiced by other bishops from various regions, reflecting a broader discontent. Interestingly, Pope Leo XIV recently commented on the issue, indicating the complexity surrounding the topics of abortion and immigration ethics. He highlighted the need for respectful discussion and the importance of seeking common ground among differing views.

Ultimately, the debate around this award has not only spotlighted the divide within the Catholic community but also the broader discussions about ethical issues that affect many people. While this event has clearly stirred up controversy, it also illustrates how personal beliefs and public recognition can lead to significant backlash.
