Sean Payton’s Thoughts on the Tush Push Play

Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton is gearing up to face the Philadelphia Eagles this week, and interestingly, he has no qualms about the controversial “tush push” play. This maneuver, while debated, seems to have his support.

Payton believes that concerns surrounding player safety regarding this play are, well, perhaps a bit overblown. “The reason I stood up in support of it is very simple,” he remarked. “If the powers that be have concerns for aesthetic or competitive reasons—because it’s tough to manage—then I get it. But when health and safety are thrown into the mix, I think it’s the safest play in football. My nose rose at that.” His perspective, shaped by years of involvement in these discussions, leans towards seeing it as just another variation of a quarterback sneak.

However, not everyone shares his views. The “tush push” has been a hot topic, especially when the Green Bay Packers proposed banning it, though their efforts fell short—22 votes were needed for that to happen, and they didn’t reach that threshold.

As the Eagles continue to make strides with this tactic, they recently showcased a creative version of it against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where quarterback Jalen Hurts handed off the ball instead of pushing through himself. This play helped secure their fourth win of the season.

On the flip side, the Broncos are looking to bounce back after a mixed start, currently sitting at 2-2. Payton knows that to win this week, they’ll need to devise a strong game plan that can potentially neutralize the Eagles’ effective play. After all, in the realm of football, finding a way to counter a team’s strength can be crucial.

Payton isn’t one to shy away from challenges. He’s focused on devising a strategy to counter the Eagles’ approach instead of merely complaining about it. The excitement of the game is palpable, and it’ll be interesting to see how these strategies unfold on the field.
