Seann William Scott Talks About His New Role
Seann William Scott, known for his comedic roles over the last three decades, shows no signs of slowing down. With the second season of Shift Gear around the corner, he’s excited to continue his work on this ABC sitcom, where he stars alongside Tim Allen and Cat Dennings.
During a conversation with Desader, Scott reflected on his initial hesitation about joining the series. “I really didn’t know how much fun it would be,” he mentioned. He emphasized that while it feels more like enjoyment than work, it also allows him the flexibility to attend his daughter’s school events, which is a real bonus.
The plot of Shift Gear centers on Riley, played by Dennings, who moves in with her conservative father Matt, portrayed by Allen, following a divorce. Scott plays Gabe, a mechanic at Matt’s auto shop in Los Angeles. Their dynamic is complicated; Gabe is a close friend of Riley and finds himself caught between the two. The first season ended with a hint of romantic feelings from Gabe towards Riley, leaving their fate uncertain.
Interestingly, joining the show wasn’t something Scott initially sought out. What changed his mind was his experience on The Righteous Gemstones, where he played Corey Millsapp. His role there, along with his conversations with the creators, convinced him to take the leap into sitcoms. “My agent reached out about this sitcom in LA, and I was like, ‘I don’t know, I’ve never thought about sitcoms.’ Then he said, ‘It’s with Tim Allen,’ and I was intrigued,” Scott recalled.
Scott also credited the support from Danny McBride and other actors, including John Goodman, as significant motivators. They encouraged him by stating things like, “You have to do this” if he wanted to balance work with fatherhood. It seems that camaraderie made the decision easier.
The relationship between Gabe and Riley promises to be electric in the new season. As the first season’s conclusion left viewers with an unresolved tension, Season 2 is set to dive deeper into their chemistry, exploring whether their connection evolves beyond friendship. Fans are eagerly waiting to see how this storyline develops.
