Apartment building in New York City suffers partial collapse

New York City Apartment Collapse After Explosion

On Wednesday morning, several high-rise apartments in New York City collapsed following what Mayor Eric Adams described as “some sort of explosion.” This incident occurred in the Bronx’s Motthaven district.

Thankfully, there were no reported injuries. Initial assessments indicate that the explosion originated in the building’s boiler room.

A local resident shared their experience, saying, “I was awake when it happened. I walked to the window and then—boom! I heard a big explosion. When I returned to the kitchen, the entire building was gone.”

Aerial footage revealed a significant portion of the 20-story structure was in ruins. Another observer noted, “The smell of gas is incredibly strong.”

Investigations Underway

Adams later informed the public via social media, stating, “We have a comprehensive report from our first responders and will keep everyone updated. Please avoid the area for your safety.”

According to NYC Deputy Mayor of Public Safety, Kaz Daughtry, the collapsed side of the building was near the chimney, but they confirmed that the perimeter was secured and safe for first responders.

Daughtry also mentioned that search and rescue missions were ongoing, along with investigations into the cause of the explosion.

Reports indicated that the gas explosion occurred inside the incinerator shaft, according to the New York City Fire Department.

Con Edison Gas is currently shutting off gas utilities in the affected buildings, as confirmed by New York City Emergency Management.

A total of 40 apartment units had to be evacuated, with many firefighters rushing to the scene, as reported.

“Residents of the F&G apartments are being relocated for their safety and will receive assistance at a nearby community center,” Daughtry added, emphasizing their commitment to supporting those displaced.
