Support for Family of Michigan Church Shooter
The family of Thomas Jacob Sanford, the individual responsible for a tragic shooting at a Michigan church that left four dead, has expressed immense gratitude for the support they’ve received from the local community. This love comes from the very faith community affected by the violence.
On Wednesday evening, members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints organized a fundraising initiative that has already exceeded $225,000 in contributions for Sanford’s widow and son. This campaign gained significant traction, especially among individuals within the Church globally, reflecting a strong sentiment of forgiveness amidst the tragedy.
Katie Hamilton, Sanford’s sister, shared with news outlets how deeply moved their family is by the outpouring of support from the Latter-day Saint community. “When I saw what you did as a community and remembered us as a family in this situation, I can’t find the words to express,” she stated.
David Butler, who initiated the fundraiser, explained his motivation comes from a desire to help the Sanford family as per his faith’s teachings. He emphasized, “Being a follower of Jesus Christ means caring for those who cannot care for themselves.”
Butler noted that the fundraiser resonated with many, being an act of compassion towards a family that didn’t choose their circumstances. He reiterated that despite the horrific actions of Sanford, his family—especially his children—should not be forgotten or left to struggle alone.
Many donors shared messages of encouragement with their contributions. One read, “We know deeply what it feels like when we try to do good. Our church and community do not blame Sister Sanford, and we pray for you, welcoming you with open arms, just as Jesus taught.” Another noted, “You are loved, and this was not your fault. Find healing, strength, and peace.” Yet another highlighted the hope and healing sentiments within the church in light of this tragedy.
The response to the fundraiser has been predominantly positive, though it has faced some critiques, with worries about supporting the shooter’s family in the wake of such violence. Butler responded by emphasizing the importance of not leaving the Sanford family behind, sharing that the children should not bear the burden of their father’s actions.
As communities process the aftermath of this shooting, the efforts to extend love and support to the Sanford family reflect a powerful message that encompasses forgiveness, compassion, and unity in times of crisis.
