Northern Light Health and Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield announced on Wednesday that they will extend their current contracts for an additional 30 days while continuing negotiations for a long-term agreement. This temporary extension ensures that Northern Light doctors and healthcare providers, including primary care professionals, can still offer services under Anthem’s personal health plan until October 31. Additionally, Northern Light’s inpatient and outpatient services will remain in the Anthem network for Medicare Advantage Plans until December 31.
Governor Janet Mills stated that he met with representatives from both Northern Light and Anthem, urging them to agree to the 30-day extension to facilitate ongoing contract discussions. He emphasized the need for both sides to resolve their disputes and reach a “fair agreement.” The governor remarked on the uncertainty stemming from the lack of a finalized contract, which is causing concern among residents about their ability to access necessary care. “Maine deserves better,” he said, insisting that this situation needs prompt resolution.
In their joint statement, Northern Light and Anthem committed to working on a long-term contract that focuses on affordability, access, and quality of care. They also mentioned the possibility of establishing consistent start and end dates for future contracts to provide greater clarity for patients and members.
For questions regarding continuity of care or compensation, patients can consult Anthem’s website or call the number located on their member ID card. Moreover, inquiries about bookings or billing can be directed to Northern Light’s website or their dedicated information line at 1-888-616-0039.
