Chris Tomlin Highlights Why the King Remains the King

Chris Tomlin’s New Album: “King is the King”

Chris Tomlin’s music has undoubtedly reached unexpected heights. As he gears up for the release of his 18th album, titled “King is the King,” he emphasizes that the focus remains on God. He reflects, “I never imagined God would weave me into music and impact people’s lives. From the very start, my goal has been consistent—it’s really all about that.”

Crosswalk: Where were you spiritually during the creation of this album?

Chris Tomlin: It’s been three years since my last release. I poured my heart into this album, and there’s a lot of intention behind it. Honestly, I think this is my best work. It feels really special. This record captures various moments and experiences.

CW: Did you incorporate any original songs into this album?

CT: Yes, there’s a reason for the album’s sequence; it holds many connections. I was leading music in the mid-90s, and the king remains the king. After 30 years, each song I sing still holds true, whether it was released three decades ago or today.

CW: What core values were at the forefront while recording this album?

CT: I’ve seen many governments rise and fall, as well as kingdoms. Our hopes are, and I continually strive to remind people, that we belong to a grander kingdom, an eternal one, far beyond our immediate view. I love how worship brings us back to this realization.

CW: The album symbolizes a crown. Why is that?

CT: On the cover, there are two crowns—the crown of thorns and the king’s crown. I aimed to create this visual. It’s unique to see these two crowns together, and I believed this imagery told the entire story. Jesus wears both crowns, having worn the crown of thorns during his time on earth.

CW: Why is there an art element to the album?

CT: Honestly, art has so much to say about it. This is something I’ve never done before. My wife often jokes about my lack of art portfolio.

CW: What have you been up to for the past three years?

CT: I took my time with the album, thinking through every detail and capturing some amazing moments. There are songs that originated from my doubts, and I’m really curious to see how people will receive them.

CW: What does your songwriting process look like?

CT: Most of my ideas come late at night. I’ll grab my phone and just sing—sometimes it’s a simple idea. But often, the most powerful thoughts stem from God’s Word. Seeing His message come alive through His people inspires a lot of the songs I write.
