Trump Discusses Potential Agency Cuts Amid Federal Shutdown

On Thursday, Donald Trump indicated that both Democrats and Republicans are in talks to identify which “Democrat agencies” might face funding cuts, following a failure to reach an agreement on a government funding package.

In a post on his social media platform, he shared that he had met with Russell Vought, the director of the U.S. Office of Management and Budget. Trump expressed his intention to suggest which agencies should be cut and whether those cuts would be temporary or permanent.

“It’s hard to believe that the radical left Democrats have handed me this unique chance,” he remarked in his post. “They’re not foolish, so perhaps this could be a way to, you know, make America great again, quietly and swiftly!”

The government partially shut down after midnight on Wednesday due to an impasse over funding legislation.

Trump hinted that substantial, perhaps “irreversible,” changes could occur through the federal workforce, including potential layoffs. He stressed that while he and his team did not desire a government shutdown, they were curious about the potential “good” that might arise from it.

On Wednesday, Vice President JD Vance criticized Democrats for allegedly compelling illegal immigrants to receive taxpayer-funded emergency medical care, while Senate Minority Leader Dn.Y. echoed concerns.

Vance pointed out the political dynamics at play, saying, “Let’s be realistic: Chuck Schumer is facing a significant challenge from Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.” He added that the current shutdown stems from Schumer’s fear of this challenge and the pressure from the more radical members of his own party.

Furthermore, White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt contended that the Democrats engineered the closure to fund healthcare for undocumented immigrants, despite taxpayers already facing a $37 trillion debt.

“For context, the Democrats are unwilling to keep the government running over healthcare for illegal aliens, jeopardizing vital healthcare programs for American citizens,” she argued. “Programs for women, children, community health centers, and Medicare treatment options are now at risk, as the Dems reject a clean continuing resolution.”
