Tom Gordon discusses being featured in a Stephen King novel

Tom Gordon and Stephen King’s Unique Connection

Tom “Flash” Gordon has had a remarkable journey in Major League Baseball. Over his 21-year career, he became a three-time All-Star and set an impressive record with 54 consecutive saves, among other achievements.

Interestingly, noted author Stephen King, a devoted fan of the Boston Red Sox, based his book, “The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon,” on the pitcher’s life. King even attended games at Fenway Park to witness Gordon in action.

In a recent chat, Gordon shared his surprise about King’s presence at the ballpark. He recalled, “I didn’t know they were sitting there, but it turned into this moment to reflect on my career.” The Kings visited his hometown, where they had a meal at the Olympic Restaurant, leading to discussions about the book’s inspiration.

Gordon learned that Tabitha King felt he was the perfect fit for the character based on his approach to the game. “I did ask a few times, why me? And he said they appreciated my perspective—it was genuine, like a kid at play,” he explained.

Throughout this period, Gordon transitioned into a closer role, just as the book about him gained traction. He recounted a conversation with manager Jimmy Williams, who recognized his potential. Gordon said he felt a blend of pressure and excitement during this pivotal time.

Gordon’s record of 54 consecutive saves, although now surpassed, remains a proud moment in his career. Celebrating that success with his family made it even more meaningful. “To me, that was special, and it felt good to have Stephen King elevate that story,” he mentioned.

He reflected on the impact of King’s book in his community, feeling a sense of pride as it created a buzz back home. “It sent shockwaves through my town, everyone was excited,” he said, expressing his appreciation for the author’s influence in his life.

Beyond his past, Gordon is now involved with Perfect Game, an esteemed scouting organization. He’s also set to launch a podcast called “Innings,” which will feature interviews with various figures in the baseball world. Traveling in an RV equipped with a podcast studio, he plans to capture stories from current and former players alike.

Gordon’s journey is a blend of passion, perseverance, and unexpected connections that continue to shape his life.
