AFC North: A Season of Disappointment

It’s hard to pinpoint exactly what went wrong for the AFC North this season. The hope was for a fierce competition, yet the results left fans scratching their heads, with the division collectively posting a 7-9 record by Week 5—on par with the underwhelming AFC South and NFC South.

Let’s break down this perplexing season for the division, examining the key issues with each team that contributed to this unusual outcome.

Pittsburgh Steelers (3-1)

First off, congratulations to the Steelers, although their situation feels a little suspicious. They might have a winning record, but they’re not exactly a strong team. They managed to score 96 points this season, but a point differential of just 98 points raises eyebrows.

It’s not necessarily shameful to have a tough schedule, yet this team has struggled, with a 0.333 record in 2018 and only victories against the Jets, Vikings, and Patriots to show for it. Sure, if you want to cling to hope about their winning record, that’s your choice. It’s a bit like believing you might win the lottery—optimism, perhaps, but not exactly grounded in reality.

Then there’s Aaron Rodgers, who’s been nothing short of a puzzling enigma this year. Despite a passer rating of 102.6, his QBR sits at just 45.9, a staggering difference of -56.7. He padded his stats with a few good performances but faced a decent defense in Seattle.

The Steelers rank 26th in passing and 31st in rushing. Defensively, they’re 29th in yards allowed and 28th in first downs given up. Not great, to say the least. It’s a strange situation where a team sits at the top of a lackluster division yet feels so unconvincing.

Cincinnati Bengals

The Bengals’ situation is just baffling. They were mediocre even before star quarterback Joe Burrow was injured, but now they’re genuinely struggling. Coach Zac Taylor, potentially a talented leader, seems to be floundering without his star QB. The team has been outclassed by the Vikings and Broncos recently.

It’s clear that without Burrow, the team has lost its footing. Backup Jake Browning isn’t helping things, especially when plays designed for Burrow are being run. The rushing game is in shambles, and the defense has allowed a staggering 119 points.

The Bengals won’t win a game until Burrow returns. It’s as simple as that.

Baltimore Ravens

The Ravens are another team in disarray without Lamar Jackson. Surprisingly, despite their 1-3 record, they’re arguably still the best team in the AFC North. They’ve faced some tough opponents—losing to the Bills, Lions, and Chiefs doesn’t help.

Their defensive issues have been glaring this year. They rank at the bottom for allowed passing yards and rushing. Last season, they excelled defensively, but this year is a different story. The offense hasn’t stepped up either, making things even messier for the team.

It’s tough to see if the Ravens can recover from their early-season issues. The clock is ticking, and each week seems to worsen their situation.

Cleveland Browns

Lastly, the Browns, a team with a lot of potential, have somehow ended up losing games they shouldn’t. They’ve switched quarterbacks, moving away from Joe Flacco, who struggled significantly. Now, Dillon Gabriel is stepping in, while Chedur Sanders is sitting on the sideline without a chance to play.

Defensively, the Browns are solid, still allowing relatively few yards. But with the offense not producing, they find themselves defending more often than they should. If Gabriel can bring even a modest improvement, the team could be much better off.

Then there’s the remarkable Miles Garrett. He’s having an exceptional season, really smashing it—34 tackles and a pacing of 17.0 sacks. He’s effectively making an impact, even when the rest of the team struggles.

But fundamental QB issues are still lingering for the Browns; we knew that going into the season, and it hasn’t changed.

Looking Ahead

As the dust settles, the question remains: who will emerge as the leader in this chaotic division?

  • With Jackson potentially returning, the Ravens have a solid shot, provided they fix their defensive woes and use Derrick Henry effectively.
  • If Burrow is back and the Bengals can adjust their defense, they might have a chance.
  • Should the Browns see some productivity from Gabriel, they could leverage their strong defense to win.
  • If none of these teams step up, the Steelers might claw their way to the top by default.

This season has certainly been a whirlwind for the AFC North—it’s perhaps the biggest mess in football.
