Simply put
- SORA 2’s terms state that deleting a SORA account also erases all ChatGPT+ API data permanently.
- Once deleted, users cannot reuse their email addresses or phone numbers.
- OpenAI is reportedly working on another feature related to removing SORA accounts.
Deleting your account on OpenAI’s SORA 2 app is more than just a simple click; it’s irreversible.
OpenAI has made it clear in its terms that when a SORA profile is deleted, all associated data is permanently lost, including conversation history and API usage through ChatGPT and SORA. It will be erased.
With SORA 2 moving toward new features, such as the AI shopping assistant using Shopify, the gravity of these deletion measures is significant.
The terms specify that if a user’s email or phone number is deleted, those accounts cannot be reused. Although the company hasn’t publicly clarified why these rules extend to ChatGPT accounts, they are working on separating the two platforms.
“We are committed to providing users with a clear way to manage their OpenAI accounts, and you can delete your account anytime,” OpenAI mentioned. “We are also working on a feature to allow the individual removal of SORA accounts and will provide updates when it’s available.”
However, under the current terms of SORA 2, deleting an account is a permanent action.
“All data will be deleted, including profiles, conversations, and API usage across ChatGPT and SORA,” stated the terms. “You won’t be able to reuse the same email or phone number for a new account. Additionally, if you are accessing ChatGPT through the API, that access will also be revoked.”
The introduction of SORA 2 comes at a time when there’s an influx of AI-created content, avatars, and various forms of “AI slops” saturating the internet.
Originally launched in February 2024 as part of ChatGPT’s browser-based features, SORA has now transitioned to a mobile application format with the standalone release of SORA 2. Currently, the app is not publicly available, requiring an invitation code for access.
Unlike its predecessor, the invite-only SORA 2 now includes a “cameo” feature, allowing users to insert their images into AI-generated scenes following a brief video check of their portraits and audio. On its first day, users created content ranging from NSFW ads to deepfakes of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.
OpenAI is attempting to carve out a distinct identity for SORA 2 separate from ChatGPT, but once a deletion occurs, it’s not reversible. Users who delete their accounts might inadvertently lose access not only to OpenAI’s main chatbots but also to AI-generated video content.
Linking SORA 2 to ChatGPT could potentially boost interest among users testing new features in SORA. Critics, however, are expressing concern that OpenAI is shifting away from its original goal of developing safe and broadly beneficial AI, veering instead toward more frivolous content like memes and viral entertainment.
