Shedeur Sanders at Cleveland Browns: Mixed Reactions Followed
The focus is on Shedeur Sanders, a rookie quarterback for the Cleveland Browns, who recently drew attention with his responses to media queries following comments from former NFL quarterback Cam Newton. Sanders is currently positioned third on the team’s depth chart, with Joe Flacco, a seasoned veteran, on the bench. Dillon Gabriel has been designated as the starter for Week 5 against the Minnesota Vikings, while Flacco is set to be a backup.
On Wednesday, Sanders reacted to the quarterback situation by mimicking an answer to one of the reporters in the locker room. This comes in the wake of NFL analyst Rex Ryan criticizing Sanders for his outspoken personality.
Sanders’ behavior elicited a range of responses, particularly from Newton, who suggested that the Browns are not set up to enable the young quarterback to thrive.
“I doubt Sanders wants to find success in Cleveland,” Newton noted during a recent episode of his podcast. “If you genuinely desire for Cleveland to succeed, it’s almost like Shedeur’s approach represents the opposite.”
Newton further discussed Sanders’ preseason performance where he managed to throw two touchdowns during a game with the Carolina Panthers but faced injury in the subsequent matchup. In the final exhibition against the Los Angeles Rams, he really struggled.
Newton brought up a hypothetical issue: “What kind of opportunity does Shedeur have to succeed if the conditions aren’t right around him? The pressure is on him, especially if you’re not giving him quality support.”
He also speculated on the Browns’ motivations, implying they might want to retain Sanders for image and marketing reasons. “This is my theory regarding the Browns: Shedeur has undeniable talent, but the attention he garners could be more of a distraction for most teams. It seems the Browns are caught up in a unique situation where keeping him could benefit their business image.”
Flacco struggled recently, throwing two interceptions in a 34-10 loss to the Detroit Lions, leaving the Browns with a 1-3 record as they head into Week 5.
