Al Michaels Experiences Odd Incident During 49ers-Rams Game

Prime Video’s Thursday Night Soccer Broadcast Confusion

During the broadcast, Al Michaels, the announcer, experienced several moments of confusion that stood out to viewers. One notable incident occurred in the first quarter when San Francisco’s Mac Jones connected with DeMarcus Robinson. However, a penalty was called, marking a rough 15-yard infraction by a Rams player, leading officials to move the ball to the 41-yard line. Despite the clarification, Michaels appeared puzzled by the development.

“This is back,” he remarked, seemingly unsure before the referee clarified the penalty call. “Wait a second, the 49ers are back on the 41-yard line. Did you declare it legal by replay assist?”

His broadcast partner, Kirk Herbstreit, tried to jump in and provide some clarity, but Michaels eventually got back to the ongoing game.

This wasn’t the only awkward moment for the seasoned broadcaster. He mistakenly referred to 49ers tight end Conor McKibitz as Colton McKibitz, which added a lighter tone to an otherwise challenging night.

As the game progressed, other notable gaffes occurred. After a lengthy drive, the Los Angeles Rams attempted to run Kylen Williams in for a crucial score, yet Michaels once again seemed out of sync with the play, reacting slowly to a key moment.

Later, in overtime, during a critical fourth-and-one while trailing 26-23, the Rams made another rush with Williams against the 49er defense. Confusingly, Michaels stated that Williams fumbled the ball, which, in fact, hadn’t happened; he was merely brought down during the play.

While Al Michaels is celebrated for calling many iconic moments in sports, this particular broadcast did not showcase his best work.
