Actors Guild, Emily Blunt, Whoopi Goldberg React to AI 'Actress' Tilly Norwood: 'Very Frightening... Please Stop'

Concerns Over AI-Generated Actress Tilly Norwood

The Screen Actors Guild (SAG-AFTRA), along with notable figures like actress Emily Blunt and Whoopi Goldberg, has voiced strong opposition to the AI-generated character known as Tilly Norwood. Blunt describes the situation as “really, really scary.” In a social media statement, SAG-AFTRA asserted that “creativity is human-centric,” expressing concern over the introduction of AI in performances that displaces human actors.

The union emphasized that Tilly Norwood is not a real actor but a computer-generated character created using the work of numerous professional performers, typically without consent or compensation. They elaborated that such AI creations lack life experience and emotion, remarking that audiences seem uninterested in content generated without genuine human experience.

“This doesn’t solve any issues,” SAG-AFTRA claimed. “It merely uses borrowed performances, jeopardizing the livelihoods of real actors and undervaluing human artistry.” Furthermore, they reminded producers that using synthetic performers comes with contractual obligations that require proper notification and negotiation.

Emily Blunt responded to the emergence of AI-generated actors, voicing her apprehensions during an interview. She questioned the ethics of AI, exclaiming, “Good Lord, we’re screwed.” In her view, it’s essential for agencies to refrain from using these technologies, warning against the loss of genuine human connection.

While discussing AI’s potential effects on the industry, Blunt appeared concerned and noted that Norwood resembles a combination of well-known actors. “They basically want her to replace someone like Scarlett Johansson, but we already have Scarlett Johansson,” she pointed out.

Whoopi Goldberg added to the conversation by raising doubts about whether an AI creation could truly compete with authentic performers. She remarked that such technology seems to offer an unearned advantage, citing the distinct qualities that iconic actors like Bette Davis and Humphrey Bogart brought to their performances.

Goldberg acknowledged that, although AI technology isn’t quite refined yet, it may reach a level of sophistication in just a few years. She expressed concerns about the broader implications of AI outside the entertainment industry, noting, “Some fields are utilizing AI, and there’s talk about how lonely it can be for people.” She warned against the risks posed by AI as it begins to infiltrate various sectors.

Other Hollywood personalities, including Melissa Barrera and Keesy Clemons, also criticized the emergence of AI-generated content. Meanwhile, Elleen van der Werden, the creator behind Tilly Norwood through the AI production studio Particle 6, defended her work. She clarified that Tilly is not meant to replace human actors but to serve as a new tool for storytelling, much like animation and CGI have in the past.

Van der Werden viewed AI as a medium that complements rather than undermines live performance, arguing that it opens up new possibilities without diminishing the craft and joy of genuine acting.
