In a recent interview with HTV 10, Matt Oli, the attorney representing the late LSU wide receiver Kylen Lacey, discussed details regarding the crash that occurred in December 2024. He emphasized that Lacey’s vehicle was found to be “about 72 yards” away from the collision site, challenging the narratives surrounding his client’s actions.
Lacey, who tragically ended his life in April prior to the NFL Draft, was reportedly involved in an incident where he compelled two drivers to unlawfully cross the centerline, maneuvering around a slower car. The second driver collided with another vehicle as a result.
After the crash, Lacey allegedly left the scene without offering assistance or notifying authorities. He was later charged with negligent homicide, felony death, and reckless driving after turning himself in weeks later, according to ESPN.
Oli presented a video during this interview, showcasing Lacey’s green Dodge Charger entering the frame shortly after the collision in La Forche Parish.
“Data indicates that Kylen Lacey actually surpassed four cars. There’s no doubt that he was further north at that point,” Oli noted in the interview. “However, he returned to his lane, which was about 92.3 yards back, right before the crash occurred. At that moment, he was 72.6 yards behind the vehicle at impact. The key term is behind.”
Oli also shared body cam footage showing officers directing witnesses to provide details for their reports, questioning why they did not reach out to the passengers in Lacey’s car.
“Kylen Lacey’s vehicle had another passenger,” he stated. “They were aware of this, given that there’s video evidence of this individual exiting the car. Why didn’t they confirm his identity? Why wasn’t there an attempt to hear from someone who could provide critical insights into this case?”
Oli described the investigation as a “witch hunt,” arguing that it felt overly focused and aggressive.
After spending two years in Louisiana and three years at LSU, Lacey’s untimely death followed a police chase related to another incident just days before a scheduled grand jury hearing.
Following his son’s death, Lacey’s father, Kenny, took to Facebook to urge parents to foster open communication with their children. He stressed that being open about mental health is vital and that signs of distress can often be subtle yet significant.
