Saints offer a new challenge for the Giants in Jaxson Dart's second game as a starter

New Orleans: Dart’s NFL Road Challenge

As he geared up for his 84th NFL game, veteran guard John Lunyan Jr. recognized that the journey for rookie quarterback Jackson Dart was only just beginning. It’s a full-time job, and everyone plays a part in it. He understood that for a newcomer like Dart, every experience counts and timing matters.

“I think it’ll help to be at home for the first game; he’ll at least get to hear the crowd,” Runyan observed.

Last week, Dart did hear the crowd during his debut NFL start, contributing to the Giants’ first win of the season against the Chargers, 21-18, after a string of three losses.

Dart experienced the exhilarating cheers of MetLife Stadium as he rushed for a 15-yard touchdown on the opening drive and celebrated a critical 10-yard completion to Theo Johnson, which uplifted the team.

Now, as he heads into Start 2, he faces another daunting challenge. At just 22, this marks his inaugural NFL road game, following his previous home victory. The challenge is intensified with an opponent like the Saints, currently sitting at 0-4, making it crucial for Dart to maintain composure in what is likely to be a loud Superdome.

“Having played in the SEC, I’ve been to a lot of big venues,” Dart shared. “We’ve got to buckle down and utilize our strengths. We’re focusing on simulating crowd noise during practice.” He recognizes that while they can mimic the environment, actual conditions are unpredictable.

The Giants have been preparing all week, exposing Dart to the cacophony he will face. His time at Ole Miss equipped him well for hostile situations, having previously played in challenging stadiums like Texas A&M and LSU.

Dart, full of confidence, described the excitement of playing indoors. “Indoor facilities, especially in bowl games, offer a different feel. The ball responds better, so I’m really looking forward to the game,” he said.

Despite being a rookie, Dart must adapt quickly. Last week’s game demonstrated that playing at home helped him manage noise better. This week, everything will be different; the fast pace and communication might become complicated.

“We’re considering our options for pacing this week,” remarked coach Brian Daboll. “There’s a variety of strategies we can implement.” Dart will have to navigate the intricacies of a high-pressure environment without his go-to receiver, Malik Neighbors, who’s sidelined with an injury. It’s a challenge, especially since other receivers may not match Neighbors’ skill level.

Interestingly, the Saints have struggled defensively, ranking 30th in the league and allowing 30.3 points per game across four losses.

As Dart gears up for this challenging road match, it’ll be the first moment in his budding NFL career that requires him to quiet the throngs and lead his team.
