Miyares and Sears claim Democrat Jay Jones is 'unqualified' after violent messages are revealed.

Virginia’s Attorney General Jason Miyares and Lt. Col. Wynn Sile Sears indicated this weekend that Democratic AG candidate Jay Jones has been disqualified from the race. This came after disturbing text messages emerged in which Jones expressed a desire for harm to come to the child of a Republican opponent.

This situation has escalated significantly, intensifying the already heated political climate in Virginia as the state looks ahead to the 2025 election. Miyares commented in an open letter shared on social media, saying, “Jay Jones demonstrates recklessness and a willingness to compromise his integrity. This act is disqualifying.”

Shortly thereafter, Sears took the stage to denounce Democrats, accusing them of being “consumed by hatred.”

Sears expressed her deep concerns in a passionate speech, referring to the rhetoric around the election as dangerous. She stated, “The enemy is among us, and we consume ourselves in Virginia and America today.” She condemned Jones’s comments, highlighting their severe implications for a candidate vying for a top law enforcement position.

The controversy originated from a private text message from 2022 that revealed Jones, referring to the former Republican House Speaker Todd Gilbert, had an ominous wish regarding Gilbert’s children. When confronted about this, Jones appeared to imply that the tragedy could be politically advantageous for him.

Later, Jones described his earlier statements as “embarrassing and shameful” and mentioned that he reached out to Gilbert and his family to address the situation.

Despite this, Miyares and other Republicans have insisted the damage has already been done. In his letter, he recounted the pain he has witnessed in his role as Attorney General, emphasizing that such suffering should never be a tool for political gain.

Miyares challenged voters directly, saying, “If you think it’s okay to wish for a political opponent to die, vote for me. If you believe that achieving your political goals is worth such a cost to families, then vote for me.” He reiterated his commitment to protect all Virginians, regardless of their political affiliation.

Sears’s criticisms broadened to suggest that the Democratic party’s overall approach fosters an environment of violent rhetoric. She specifically mentioned past threats and actual violence against Republicans across the nation, underlining the gravity of the situation.

The growing discord is seen as a pivotal moment in the upcoming election. Miyares noted that prior to this incident, discussions had mainly focused on differing views on public safety, but now they’re questioning the fundamental qualifications for public office.

Sears concluded her address with a call for unity, reflecting on her own background as an immigrant. She warned against letting partisan politics undermine the principles of freedom and urged action to safeguard Virginia and the nation.

At the time of publication, there was no response from Jones, Miyares, or Sears regarding requests for comments.
