Nigerian news anchor beloved by many falls three stories to her death while escaping from armed robbers

As reported by local authorities, a well-known Nigerian news anchor tragically lost her life after jumping from her apartment in a desperate bid to escape a harrowing armed robbery.

Somtochukwu “Sommie” Maduagwu, a 29-year-old reporter and producer for Arise News Channel, was discovered unconscious by police outside her three-story apartment in Abuja early Monday morning after burglars broke in and ransacked the place. The Federal Capital Police Command confirmed the incident.

She was quickly taken to a nearby hospital, where she later passed away from her injuries.

Colleagues expressed their sorrow on social media, honoring Maduagwu’s vibrant spirit and her passion for journalism. “Sommy was not just a key member of our Arise News family but also a dynamic voice that connected with the audience,” the station noted, also highlighting her background as a skilled lawyer and a devoted friend.

The station’s statement conveyed heartfelt condolences to Maduagwu’s family and friends during this challenging period, stating that while her voice has been silenced, her spirit and legacy will endure in their memories.

FCT Commissioner Ajao Adewale mentioned that a thorough investigation into the “cruel and senseless” break-in has commenced, employing intelligence measures to track down the armed offenders.

According to local media, police responded to an incident at a nearby twin building complex, where one of the security guards was shot, and Maduagwu’s apartment was specifically targeted.

The police commissioner noted, “These were personal security guards; one attempted to confront the armed men.” He added that amidst such panic, Maduagwu, who lived on the top floor, jumped out in terror, leading to the tragic outcome.

As of the latest updates, the suspect remains at large.
