Nets Preseason Update: Ty Martin’s Battle for a Roster Spot
The Nets kicked off their preseason schedule recently, showcasing a mix of talent and strategy. With just a few weeks left before the official start of the season, the focus is on securing the final roster spots.
One player in the spotlight is Ty Martin. He’s garnered significant praise from teammates for his performance in offseason workouts and training camps. Brooklyn seems to view him as a role model, exemplifying what it means to work hard and compete.
Still, Martin is acutely aware of the precarious nature of his position. “I wouldn’t say I’m on solid ground,” he expressed, referring to the $2.2 million contract he holds, which lacks guarantees. “Even guaranteed contracts have uncertainty in this arena. It’s a mindset I’ve always maintained.”
Martin acknowledged the belief his teammates have shown in him, especially after scoring three points and grabbing three rebounds during their substantial victory over Hapoel Jerusalem. “I feel validated; it’s about showcasing consistency,” he said. But, despite glowing reviews from others, he wonders if that’s sufficient for job security.
Currently, there are 21 players at camp, but only 15 have guaranteed contracts. Some will have to be let go as the roster shrinks to the required size before the season starts. Jalen Wilson, Drew Timme, and Martin might be the ones fighting for the final few slots.
For Martin, the journey to this point hasn’t been straightforward. Selected in the second round of the 2022 draft, he has navigated various challenges, including playing in summer leagues and facing obstacles in the G League. It wasn’t until last season’s breakthrough that he caught attention.
His transformation saw him outshine during summer camp, leading to his promotion to the main roster, where he made significant contributions in both time played and performance.
This offseason was pivotal for him. “For the first time, I focused purely on my game. I didn’t have to juggle travel and team obligations,” Martin shared. “This was my chance to develop skills at a deeper level.”
Teammates have taken notice of his improvements. Rookie Michael Porter Jr. remarked on Martin’s impressive adaptability on the court. “I didn’t know how good he was, but he just dominates in scrimmages. He can play multiple positions effectively,” he said.
Veteran players, such as Zaire Williams and coach Jordi Fernández, have acknowledged Martin’s growth and professionalism. “He’s really honing his craft, both in skills and physicality,” Fernández noted. “We regard him highly. He sets a standard for the team.”
The big question remains, though: will it be enough for him to secure a long-term place on the team? As the preseason unfolds, that uncertainty lingers in the air.
