McLaren Claims Second Consecutive Constructor Title
For the second year in a row, McLaren has solidified its position as a leading force in Formula 1.
The team’s success reached a high point on Sunday in Singapore. At the Marina Bay Circuit, their impressive results allowed them to clinch the constructor championship for the second consecutive time. McLaren came into the Singapore Grand Prix with a stronghold on the championship, earning 13 points thanks to efforts from Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris.
A third-place finish by Norris, coupled with Piastri’s fourth place, was sufficient for McLaren to secure the title, even while George Russell took the race win.
However, the mood in the paddock during celebrations was a bit complex.
Notably, an incident during the opening lap involving teammates and title rivals led Norris to gain a position over Piastri, but he ultimately made contact with him, sending Piastri into the wall. This left Piastri visibly irritated and caused some minor damage to Norris’s car.
“Yeah, it wasn’t exactly teamwork,” Piastri remarked to his team over the radio, expressing his frustration.
He didn’t hold back, especially after Norris experienced a slow pit stop. Referencing earlier decisions made at the Monza Grand Prix, Piastri inquired about team orders, asking, “Will we just keep the random out of the way there?”
When informed that no orders would be given, Piastri responded, “That’s not fair.”
As the race progressed, McLaren was on the verge of another title; however, the tension surrounding the driver’s championship was palpable. With Russell leading the pack, Norris fought hard to close in on Max Verstappen, who was positioned ahead.
Norris managed to narrow the gap to Verstappen as lap 57 approached. The Red Bull driver struggled with the balance of his car, and at that point, Norris was just under three seconds behind Piastri. Verstappen, on aging tires, faced additional challenges.
Still, it wasn’t sufficient for Norris to overtake; Verstappen maintained second place, leaving Norris in third and Piastri close behind in fourth.
For Piastri, the results have significant implications in the driver’s championship—as he leads Norris by 19 points and Verstappen by 63 points heading into the US Grand Prix.
After reflecting on the race, McLaren CEO Zach Brown praised the team’s accomplishments.
“It’s an incredible achievement, and it takes a collective effort,” Brown commented. “It’s nice to see the team enjoying this success after a long wait.”
Brown also acknowledged the strong performances by both McLaren drivers throughout the season, emphasizing how teamwork is critical for such achievements.
“You can’t win a constructor title without top drivers. It’s important to let them race, of course. They’re competitive, clean racers, and I’m hopeful they can achieve even more,” he added.
Norris reflected on the challenging race, noting that Verstappen made no errors. “It’s tricky to overtake in these conditions,” he said. “We’ve once again secured the constructor title, which is what I’m most pleased about.”
When questioned about the initial lap incident, Norris referred to it simply as “racing.”
“It was slippery in many areas; I tried to squeeze in but didn’t expect that,” Norris explained. “But that’s racing.”
Looking ahead, with this title secured, McLaren can now focus on aiming for the driver’s championship with either Piastri or Norris. But let’s not forget—Verstappen still remains a formidable contender.
