Kristi Noem criticizes the 'delusional' Chicago mayor for allowing the city to turn into a 'war zone'

Conflict Between Homeland Security and Chicago Mayor

In Washington, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem criticized Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, labeling him as “delusional” for his handling of the city’s issues. Her comments came after President Trump mobilized the Illinois National Guard to assist in Chicago.

Johnson, a Democrat, accused the Trump administration of implementing an unconstitutional approach towards the city. In an interview with MSNBC, he expressed that federal officials have been unfairly targeted. Noem, however, pointed out that Johnson’s approval rating in Chicago is extremely low—less than 6%, as she mentioned on “Fox & Friends Weekend.”

“In reality, he is failing his constituents,” Noem stated, emphasizing that he has not adequately supported crime victims in the city, which she claims is in turmoil. Recent polls typically show him with approval ratings between 6% and around 26%, reflecting widespread discontent among Chicago residents.

Noem’s concerns peaked prior to President Trump’s decision to federalize law enforcement in the area, enlisting around 300 National Guard troops to support federal agents on the ground. This deployment has faced opposition from Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker.

The situation escalated after a violent incident involving a woman injured by gunfire following an attack on Border Patrol agents on Chicago’s south side. Noem praised local residents for defending federal officers, implying that Johnson’s statements may have contributed to recent threats against them.

“He is providing cover for criminals,” she stated, asserting that Johnson’s rhetoric incites violence and undermines the safety of citizens. “This is a war zone. His city is a war zone.” She maintained that those living in the city are fully aware of the dire situation.

Johnson, who took office in 2023 and has had ongoing disputes with Pritzker, was outraged by Trump’s actions, asserting that Noem is misinformed. “The Trump administration is acting out of paranoia, and their measures are not only unconstitutional but also dangerous,” he told MSNBC.

He argued that these moves are harmful to the nation’s integrity and insisted that such actions are not aligned with American values. The Trump administration has been aggressive in immigration enforcement activities in Chicago, facing pushback from Johnson and other influential local Democrats.

Lastly, Noem accused the city of preventing federal law enforcement agencies, including Border Patrol and ICE, from accessing basic facilities, like public restrooms. Efforts to reach Johnson’s team for further comments were made.
