Arizona Cardinals Coach Frustrated After Key Loss to Titans
Arizona Cardinals head coach Jonathan Gannon was seen visibly expressing his frustration on the sidelines following a tough loss to the Tennessee Titans on Sunday. It seemed like running back Emari de Marcado was poised for a big moment, breaking away on a 76-yard touchdown run. But, that opportunity slipped away, potentially affecting the Titans’ chances for a comeback.
In a surprising turn, Demercado fumbled just shy of the goal line. The ball bounced off the back of the end zone, leading to a touchback, which was a real setback for the team.
After the play, Gannon was animated in addressing Demercado, while offensive lineman Paris Johnson Jr. tried to console him. Post-game, Gannon called the offensive errors “unacceptable” and dodged specifics on his conversation with Demercado after the fumble. “It’s not about one play by any means. We have a coaching point now that we don’t want to tell you all right now,” he remarked.
The Cardinals faced another critical mistake late in the game. Just after a nine-point lead at 4:55, they appeared to intercept a tipped pass from Cam Ward, but Dadrion Taylor DeMerson, who made the catch, fumbled as he hit the ground. The sequence led to a chaotic scramble as various Cardinals players attempted to recover the ball, ultimately culminating in Texas Titan receiver Tyler Rockett securing it for a touchdown.
Despite these blunders, the Cardinals still had a shot at victory. After being forced to punt by the Titans’ defense, Ward made a crucial downfield pass to Calvin Ridley, who caught a 38-yard throw, bringing them closer to scoring range. An 11-yard run by Tony Pollard then set up a field goal opportunity, sealing the game with a late 29-yard kick.
Gannon reflected on the performance, stating, “It’s very unfortunate. It felt like we had multiple chances to correct things across all phases, but we didn’t.” He seemed to be echoing a sentiment he’s had repeatedly this season, acknowledging, “We will continue to lose until we do a better job.”
In the aftermath, it’s clear that the Cardinals, while showcasing some potential, have some significant issues to address moving forward.
