Bad Bunny Performs on SNL, Mixes Spanish in Monologues
Last weekend on Saturday Night Live, Puerto Rican musician Bad Bunny entertained audiences with portions of his monologue delivered in Spanish.
This appearance followed his recent announcement as a halftime performer for Super Bowl LX, an honor recognized by the NFL.
Ocasio, who is also known as Benito Antonio Martinez Ocasio, opened the sketch comedy show by expressing his excitement to perform at the Super Bowl. He humorously remarked that “even Fox News” would be pleased about it. Clips were shown featuring Fox News anchors, including Sean Hannity and Jesse Watters, amusingly declaring, “Bad Bunny is my favorite musician and he should be the next president.”
He expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “I’m really excited to participate in the Super Bowl, and I know that my fans around the world feel the same.”
At this point, Bad Bunny transitioned into Spanish. Historically, Saturday Night Live has primarily aired in English, and the decision to include Spanish elements has sparked some debate, especially considering his music’s focus on the Spanish language. Nevertheless, he has incorporated foreign language segments in past performances.
He stated, “I especially want to acknowledge all the Latinos around the world, and those in the U.S. who have worked hard to pave the way.”
Continuing in Spanish, he noted, “This is more than just an achievement for me; it’s a victory for all of us. It underscores our impact and contribution to this country—something that can never be taken away.”
He concluded with a playful jab at critics, saying, “And if you don’t understand what I said, well, you have four months to learn.”
His announcement to perform at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, stirred significant buzz online the previous week.
In his remarks, Bad Bunny reflected on the various reasons he has been absent from U.S. venues, mentioning concerns about potential immigration issues, saying, “There are some serious considerations to keep in mind.”
Interestingly, during an interview, a Trump administration advisor commented on Ocasio’s fears regarding illegal immigration, reaffirming the challenges present.
Bad Bunny has also faced scrutiny for his past criticisms of President Trump, notably through a July 4th music video that provocatively showcased the Puerto Rican flag on the Statue of Liberty alongside the president’s impersonation.
During the event, he supported Vice President Kamala Harris for the upcoming 2024 election and expressed discontent over a joke made by comedian Tony Hinchcliffe at a Trump rally, reflecting ongoing tensions.
Activists often argue that performing in Spanish serves as a form of resistance, especially in sporting events, aiming to remember Latin America’s history and influence.
