CBS News Welcomes Bari Weiss as New Editor-in-Chief

CBS News is seeing a fresh change in leadership with Bari Weiss stepping in as editor-in-chief. This change comes shortly after her previous outlet, The Free Press, was acquired by Paramount for $150 million. In her first memo to the team, Weiss expressed a desire for both Democratic and Republican accountability.

She wrote, “It’s an extraordinary privilege to help update the legacy we have, especially in today’s need for it. I hope to get to know you all and learn what’s working, what’s not working, along with your views on what makes CBS News a trusted source.” Weiss emphasized the importance of approaching journalism with an open mind and fresh perspectives.

Weiss outlined ten “core journalism values,” which include equitable scrutiny of both political parties and the commitment to delivering fair, factual reporting. The values also stress clear communication, an exploration of diverse viewpoints, and a readiness to tackle challenging stories, regardless of their popularity.

Having left The New York Times in 2020 due to alleged bullying, Weiss launched the “Common Sense” newsletter, which eventually evolved into The Free Press. Now taking on this new role at CBS, her presence is generating buzz among staff.

David Ellison, the new CEO of Paramount, mentioned in his message to employees the importance of reducing partisanship in media discourse. He criticized the simplified “us vs. them” narrative that often dominates coverage and highlighted a collective responsibility to shift the focus toward truth and understanding.

Through this leadership change, CBS is poised for a transformation that aligns more closely with its mission to serve as a reliable platform for information and dialogue. Many are curious to see how these shifts in direction will impact the organization.
