Former Jets player stunned by stabbing and arrest of Mark Sanchez's ex-teammate

Nick Mangold Comments on Mark Sanchez Incident

Nick Mangold, a former center for the Jets, reminisced about the years he spent with Mark Sanchez, the quarterback who led them to the 2009 AFC Championship game, which they lost 30-17 against the Indianapolis Colts. Recently, Sanchez was involved in a serious incident that has raised eyebrows.

“I’ve known Mark since 2009, but it’s been 16 years, and he really doesn’t seem to have any offensive instincts,” Mangold shared with the Post. “Something just wasn’t right about last night. I really hope they find out what happened.”

Having played alongside Sanchez up until the 2012 season, Mangold reached out via text upon learning of his former teammate’s stabbing, but he hasn’t heard back.

Incidentally, Sanchez, age 38, was stabbed in the chest outside a bar during a dispute with a 69-year-old food truck driver early Saturday morning.

At the time, Sanchez was in Indianapolis for a Fox analyst gig related to a game. Later that day, he was arrested while receiving medical treatment in the hospital for the stabbing.

Timeline of Events

Friday Night

  • Sanchez, working as a Fox Sports analyst, was acting “irregularly” in an alley near a downtown pub.

Just After Midnight

  • A food truck driver was picking up used cooking oil, which inadvertently blocked the alley. Sanchez approached him, initiating a confrontation.
  • In the altercation, Sanchez seemed to push the driver against a wall, prompting the driver to use pepper spray in self-defense.
  • Feeling threatened, the driver pulled out a knife and stabbed Sanchez a couple of times in the chest.
  • Sanchez then fled down the alley.

12:30 AM

  • Police responded to reports of a stabbing and found Sanchez at the bar. He was reportedly uncooperative, stating he could only recall trying to reach for a window, with no memories of the rest of the incident.
  • He was urgently taken to the hospital, while the driver sustained significant injuries, including a tear in his cheek.

Saturday

  • Sanchez underwent surgery for his stab wound and was reported to be in stable condition.
  • While still in the hospital, he faced charges of battery and public intoxication, among others.

Sunday

  • He was released from the hospital and taken to Marion County Jail, where he posted a cash bond of $300.

Update on Charges

Mangold expressed disbelief at Sanchez’s actions, saying, “It’s completely out of character. Mark doesn’t do things like this. Sure, the video evidence is there, but it just doesn’t align with who I know him to be.”

Following the incident, Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears announced that Sanchez’s charges have been escalated to a Level 5 felony for battery resulting in serious injuries.
