Israeli Government Dismisses Greta Thunberg's Claims About Reported Jail Conditions as False.

Complaints from Activist Greta Samberg Amid Israeli Detention

Greta Samberg, a Swedish activist, has raised several concerning issues to the Israeli government. She mentioned uncomfortable conditions like sitting on hard surfaces, the presence of bedbugs, inadequate food, and poor water quality.

In recent developments, Israeli authorities arrested nearly 470 individuals after numerous ships associated with the global SUMUD FLOTILLA (GSF) were halted approximately 70 nautical miles from their intended destination.

Reports from the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs indicate that while in custody, Samberg developed a rash that may have resulted from bedbug bites. Some activists expressed complaints about becoming dehydrated, labeling the entire initiative as “fake” and arguing that it would not produce any meaningful support for the conflict zone.

A letter from Samberg shared with her family allegedly requested “severe and exhausting” medical treatment following her detention by Israeli officials.

In response, the Israeli Foreign Ministry referred to these claims as “Brazen Lies,” asserting that detainees were provided with food, water, legal assistance, and medical care. A spokesperson emphasized on social media that all legal rights of the detainees were respected.

The Foreign Ministry contended that Samberg was not making any complaints to Israeli authorities because the alleged incidents had never taken place.

Local media reported that court documents from a hearing on October 5 showed the Israeli population and immigration courts supported the official narrative, indicating that while Samberg requested deportation to Sweden, there were no formal allegations of mistreatment during her detention.

This marks the second time Samberg has been expelled by Israel after attempting to access Gaza by sea. Following her arrest in June while part of a prior fleet, she claimed she was “invited” to Israel, contrary to statements from others who felt they were unfairly targeted after being apprehended in international waters.

As noted by BBC, around 171 individuals have been deported to Greece and Slovakia, representing various nationalities including Greece, Italy, France, and the United States, among others.

Both Egypt and Israel have enforced blockades on Gaza for many years to hinder the Hamas group’s acquisition of weapons.
