Tragic Deaths of a Brazilian Couple in Bathtub
Authorities in Brazil have reported that a police officer and his wife, a nail salon owner, tragically died of heat stroke. This happened after they got into an excessively hot bathtub while intoxicated, celebrating their daughter’s fourth birthday.
The deceased, 37-year-old Jefferson Luis Sagaz and 41-year-old Ana Carolina Silva, were discovered in a motel in Santa Catarina state on the night of August 11. According to local media, they had been drinking and using cocaine before heading to a nightclub and checking into the motel around midnight.
When they didn’t return to pick up their daughter the following day, family members grew concerned and reported them missing.
The couple’s bodies were found in the motel’s bathtub. Investigations concluded that heatstroke was the cause of death, though investigators noted that the cocaine and alcohol they had consumed might have masked their body’s response to the extreme heat.
Preliminary findings revealed the water temperature reached a staggering 122 degrees Fahrenheit, while a space heater was also operating in the room at high settings.
The Chief Medical Examiner, Andressa Bohr Fronza, explained that “the cause of both deaths was exogenous poisoning, contributing to severe dehydration, thermal collapse, heat stroke leading to organ failure and death.”
Toxicology reports confirmed that both alcohol and cocaine were present in their systems. Dr. Fernando Olivada Fonseca, a forensic expert, noted that the combination of these substances could have led to a state of physical dormancy, diminishing their ability to feel the heat and react appropriately.
Further investigations were conducted, including examinations of the motel room, the couple’s vehicle, and surveillance footage. A forensic report ruled out other causes of death, such as carbon monoxide poisoning or drowning, leading officials to conclude the deaths were sudden and not the result of foul play.
Interestingly, Carolina’s family had previously issued a statement asserting she was not a drug user, suggesting there might have been coercion involved. However, police indicated the couple, who had been together for nearly two decades, showed no signs of a violent relationship.
A tribute was paid to Carolina by her nail salon, which expressed their sorrow, stating, “We say goodbye to our mothers, bosses, daughters, and wives…”
