Fire Investigation in South Carolina Judge’s Hometown
Officials in South Carolina have stated that there is “no evidence” suggesting that a recent fire in the home of Circuit Judge Diane Schafer Goodstein and her husband was caused by arson. This follows speculation circulating online, as outlined in a statement provided to various outlets.
The incident, involving a 69-year-old judge’s residence on Edisto Island, occurred over the weekend. Speculation about arson emerged, but South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) chief Mark Keel indicated that preliminary investigations have found no support for the theory of a “pre-ignition explosion.” He affirmed, “At this point, no evidence supports the notion that the fire was intentionally set. Our agents have also established that there is no indication of any explosion before the fire. The investigation remains ongoing.”
Keel further emphasized, “After concluding the investigation, SLED will provide additional information.” He also cautioned the public, urging citizens and officials to refrain from sharing unverified claims.
During the fire, both Goodstein and her husband Arnold Goodstein, aged 81, were present in the house. Interestingly, she was unharmed, as she had stepped out to walk her dog. However, Arnold sustained injuries while attempting to escape the flames by jumping out of the back of the house, according to reports.
Footage shared online reveals the house fully engulfed in flames, with thick black smoke billowing into the air.
Goodstein’s professional background is notable; she began her career as an associate in 1981 and was later elected as a Resident Circuit Judge by the South Carolina General Assembly in 1988.
Arnold Goodstein also has a history of public service in South Carolina, having been elected to the Senate and the House of Representatives during his political tenure.
The fire has prompted some to speculate about its cause in light of recent criticism directed at Judge Goodstein. Notably, figures such as Neela Tanden and Wajahat Ali suggested that the fire could be linked to political attacks against her. Tanden remarked that the incident followed public scrutiny from Trump administration officials, elaborating on the timing of events.
Reports indicate that three individuals were hospitalized due to injuries sustained in the fire, with one person receiving treatment at a nearby hospital.
