Attorney General Bondi will face Senate questions over political pressure on Justice Department

WASHINGTON (August AP) — Attorney General Pam Bondy is set to face lawmakers during a congressional hearing on Tuesday, as skepticism mounts regarding her political sway over the Justice Department. This scrutiny comes on the heels of intense pressure from the White House to take legal action against one of President Donald Trump’s longstanding adversaries.

This testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee marks Bondy’s first appearance since the indictment of former FBI Director James Comey. There are growing concerns within the department that it is being manipulated for political retribution against Trump’s opponents, particularly as federal law enforcement struggles with crime and immigration issues across various cities.

The hearing is expected to highlight deep partisan divides. Republicans are likely to commend the Justice Department’s initiatives against violent crime and its efforts to shift away from President Biden’s policies. On the other hand, Democrats may critique what has been an eight-month turbulent term for Bondy, characterized by the resignation of experienced prosecutors and contentious investigations related to Trump, as well as mass layoffs, including those of senior officials from the previous administration.

This will be Bondy’s first committee appearance since she promised not to pursue political actions through the Justice Department at her confirmation hearing last January. It’s anticipated that Democrats will hold her to that promise, particularly if she seems to advocate for prosecutions against those she perceives as adversaries.

Bondy and her Republican allies have claimed that the Biden administration’s two criminal cases against Trump have politicized the Justice Department, despite the fact that some of the ongoing investigations also involve prominent Democrats.

Comey’s indictment is likely to be a focal point during the hearing. The U.S. Attorney’s Office, which initiated the case, has raised concerns regarding the strength of the evidence. Furthermore, a senior official recently resigned amid pressure, prompting the Trump administration to quickly appoint a new prosecutor to ensure the case moves forward.

There may be additional inquiries into other individuals critical of the president, including Democratic Senator Adam Schiff, New York Attorney General Leticia James, and former Governor Andrew Cuomo. Like Comey, they have all denied any wrongdoing and accused these investigations of being politically motivated.

Bondy may highlight the Justice Department’s commitment to combating violent crime by activating federal law enforcement in Washington, D.C., and Memphis, Tennessee. Republican committee members are expected to underscore the department’s focus on dismantling Mexican cartels involved in drug trafficking and illegal immigration.

Questions might also arise regarding the Justice Department’s handling of files related to Jeffrey Epstein’s sex trafficking case. This high-profile investigation has been a source of controversy since the department decided in July against releasing additional files, leaving many conservative commentators disappointed.

Even amid considerable backlash from conservative factions, Bondy has continued to enjoy strong public backing from the president.
