Liz Cambage’s Advice to Current WNBA Players
Former WNBA player Liz Cambage has encouraged current athletes to pursue additional income sources as tensions between the league and its players’ union seem to be escalating ahead of the next season.
Cambage, who retired from the Los Angeles Sparks in 2022 after earning All-Star honors four times, reportedly made more money through subscription services than during her basketball career.
In recent interviews, she suggested that WNBA players look for ways to maximize their earnings. “You know the WNBA salary. It’s not difficult to make more money,” she remarked. “I feel like we need to find more outlets for women in sports to earn more. I think we have to explore various avenues… I’m standing here on this platform,” she added.
Cambage also shared some guidance for players contemplating similar paths to her own.
“Just be yourself, stay true to your personality,” she advised. “I didn’t have the chance to fully express myself back in the day, but now it seems women have the space either to be more feminine or to embrace their sexuality.” This conversation around player salaries has gained momentum, especially with the recent rookie class led by Caitlin Clark, who seems to have earned more than her expected rookie contract of about $76,000.
Meanwhile, Minnesota Lynx standout Napheesa Collier has called attention to the issue, pushing for better pay for players during an exit interview with a reporter last week.
