Virginia Senator Tim Kaine Defends Jay Jones Amid Controversy
Virginia Senator Tim Kaine has publicly supported fellow Democrat Jay Jones from Norfolk, despite recent controversial remarks attributed to him. During a Senate Armed Services Committee meeting on Tuesday, Kaine described Jones’ comments as “unprotected,” but nevertheless expressed his continued support for Jones’ candidacy against Republican Attorney General Jason Miyares.
“Jay apologized,” Kaine stated. “I’ve known Jay for 25 years. I don’t believe these statements reflect his character, and he has apologized. I hope that others in public life can sincerely apologize, too.”
Following a question regarding whether this situation might impact other Democrats in the upcoming elections, Kaine acknowledged it as a “significant challenge” for Jones but maintained that it wouldn’t significantly affect other races. “I think he needs to clarify things so Virginia can truly understand who he is,” he added.
Former Representative Abigail Spanberger is on the ticket for Lieutenant Governor alongside Colonel Wyn One Earl Sears, and Democrat state Senator Gazala Hashimi is running against conservative commentator John Reid for the Lieutenant Governor position.
When asked if he felt Jones should step down due to the controversy, Kaine repeated that he believes he addressed the question adequately but wasn’t certain if he could add anything more substantial to his original response.
The controversy surrounding Jones stems from a message he mistakenly sent regarding Republican Todd Gilbert, involving comments about Gilbert’s friendship with a recently deceased Democratic official. It was highlighted by a report from a national review and later confirmed through various sources in Richmond.
Jones commented on late state Senator Joe Johnson, suggesting he “lifted” Democratic progression to Gilbert and the GOP caucus. In a separate remark, he mentioned that if Gilbert were placed alongside infamous historical figures like Pol Pot and Adolf Hitler, he would be shot “twice in the head.” Furthermore, he went so far as to suggest that Gilbert and his wife “bred small fascists,” despite Gilbert having young children.
Since that message was sent in 2022, Gilbert has resigned from his position in the House and accepted a temporary appointment from President Donald Trump as a U.S. attorney in Virginia, a post he has since left.
This all comes on the heels of recent documents revealing that Jones had been charged with reckless driving on a well-known stretch of road in Virginia. He avoided a standard prison sentence by agreeing to complete 1,000 hours of community service, which would be divided between his political PAC and the Virginia chapter of the NAACP.
Local authorities indicated that it is not uncommon for traffic-related offenses to result in no prison time, especially considering concerns over spacing for serious offenders during the pandemic.
Jones is set to face Miyares in their sole debate on October 16th at Richmond University in Henrico, Virginia.
