House Speaker Addresses Government Reopening Demands

On Monday, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) presented a chart detailing the Democrats’ conditions for reopening the government. He highlighted concerns over “taxpayer-funded illegal aliens” and a proposed $1.5 trillion in new spending.

“The facts are clear. There’s a distinct difference between the Republican plan approved in the House and what the Democrats are asking for to reopen the government,” Johnson stated on social media, alongside a comparative chart illustrating this divergence.

The Republicans’ plan calls for a straightforward, seven-week extension of existing spending levels under the Biden administration, without introducing new programs or partisan spending. According to the chart, this plan “allows time for ongoing bipartisan appropriations discussions that are already in progress.”

In contrast, the Democratic proposal—termed the “Dirty” Continuing Resolution (CR)—would “restore free taxpayer-funded healthcare for illegal immigrants and able-bodied adults” as well as “allocate $5 billion to left-leaning media.” Additionally, it aims to “repeal $50 billion dedicated to rural healthcare investments” and could add up to $1.5 trillion in new partisan expenditures.

During a press conference, Johnson clarified that the government shutdown debate and healthcare issues should be seen as separate matters. He pointed out that Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) has turned this into a partisan conflict to satisfy both his liberal and conservative bases.

“Let’s examine the facts,” Johnson said, emphasizing that the GOP plan keeps the government functioning and allows for further discussions on budgeting. “Why do we call it clean? Because it’s straightforward. It’s only 24 pages long. It simply maintains the current conditions,” he explained.

“Distractions such as red herrings divert attention. They chose to provoke a conflict over healthcare,” he remarked, asserting that these are two distinct issues that deserve separate attention.

“A clean continuing resolution is just about keeping everything running smoothly so Congress can discuss healthcare. We always intended to do that. There’s ample time for it,” he asserted.

Johnson criticized Schumer’s approach, stating, “In his desperation, they turned this into a diversion. They tried to frame this as a funding issue in September, which wasn’t the case. Now, it’s about policy for December. They’ve put forth a wildly unrealistic counter-proposal, loaded with excessive liberal government agendas that we simply can’t accept.”
