Illinois Governor Comments on Emergency Status

During an NPR segment on “All Things Considered,” Illinois Governor JB Pritzker stated that he does not consider there to be a national emergency in Illinois. He mentioned that the situation is localized to certain blocks, giving it a misleadingly broad appearance similar to that of Chicago.

“It’s important to remember why we have rebellion laws in place. Those laws address things like rebellion, foreign invasion, or genuine national emergencies. None of those conditions are present in places like Portland, Washington, DC, or Los Angeles,” he explained.

While speaking with co-host Juana Summers, he noted, “The president might not share your views. He claims there is an emergency, emphasizing that it resembles a war in some urban areas.”

“But he’s essentially the one escalating the situation. The actions of ICE and CBP, using rubber bullets and tear gas, are adding to the chaos. It’s particularly evident in the two-block areas and even within Chicago itself. In his perspective, there seems to be a disconnect from reality,” he added.
