Panthers Hopeful with Jalen Coker’s Return
The Carolina Panthers, sitting at 2-3, might be on the verge of a significant boost to their offense. Jalen Coker, a second-year wide receiver, is back on the practice field for the first time this season, as the team sets aside a 21-day training window to help him recover from an injury.
Coker was sidelined in August due to a quadriceps issue, a setback that couldn’t have come at a worse time—just after the Panthers traded Adam Thielen to Minnesota. While the team initially had a wealth of options, everything changed quickly, and after letting Hunter Renflo go, Carolina found itself in a tough spot and had to bring in Coker just to bolster the wide receiver position.
The receiver situation has been a glaring issue for the Panthers this season. Though rookie Tetairooa McMillan is performing admirably and is on track for a season with over 1,000 receiving yards, the lack of other options has made the passing game predictable. This puts extra pressure on McMillan, making him a target for double coverage and severely limiting Bryce Young’s passing choices.
Coker was a bright spot during the 2024 season and played a key role in helping Young rebound after returning from a benching. After going undrafted in 2024, Coker quickly built a rapport with Young, becoming a valued weapon. He excelled in the role of Jumbo Slot receiver, racking up 370 receiving yards and two touchdowns during his seven games on the field.
With Coker out, the Panthers had to adjust their offensive strategy. Renflo stepped into the role, while Brysen Tremaine has been filling in as a makeshift Coker in select formations. Despite this, Renflo is still second on the team in receiving yards.
“We’re going to give him some (work) load and increase it every day to see what he’s going to be like,” Canales mentioned. “We’re going to continue this week with the best decisions for Jalen and the best decisions for the team.”
The 21-day training period could see Coker playing against the Bills on October 26, with a final call anticipated before the Carolina vs. Packers matchup on November 2. With the Panthers facing an uphill battle at 2-3 in a competitive NFC South, even a slight improvement offensively could make playoff aspirations more tangible. Coker’s return, if all goes well, might just be the answer they need.
