AOC Faces Backlash for Body Shaming Comments
Recently, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) sparked some controversy by mocking the height of White House staffer Stephen Miller. It seemed, to me at least, that his height was about average.
On an Instagram Live session, AOC made a remark about Miller being “4’10” tall” and suggested he expresses his frustrations through anger directed at others. “He seems to be so angry about the fact that he’s 4’10 that he takes that anger out on other people,” she commented.
She also encouraged her followers to “laugh” at officials from the Trump administration. Miller later responded on Fox News, addressing her comments earnestly, clarifying that he is actually 5 feet 10 inches tall, contradicting her claim.
It appeared that some of AOC’s followers felt uncomfortable with her remarks about Miller’s height. In response, she apologized in an Instagram Story, showing support for short individuals.
“I want to express my love for the Short King community. I don’t believe in body shaming,” AOC stated. She continued by discussing perceived inner qualities versus physical height, suggesting that someone could be short in stature but have a strong character. “If you’re a good father and you’re an ally to women… you’re mentally like 6 feet 3 inches,” she emphasized, though many found her arguments lacking substance.
It’s commendable that some of her followers called her out on the comments. It’s relatively easy to take a stand against Trump, but more challenging to confront such issues within one’s own ranks.
Let’s remember, AOC, body shaming isn’t the way to go.
