A psychiatrist from the Bronx, David Mazariego, 25, faces serious accusations after allegedly beating a man to death, following a previous assault on a security guard. The guard feels fortunate to have escaped unharmed.
Speaking to the Post under the condition of anonymity, the guard recounted his unsettling encounter with Mazariego during an investigation outside a Chelsea theater in June. He described him as clearly dangerous.
During the confrontation, Mazariego reportedly smashed the guard’s glasses after he attempted to remove him from an event for at-risk youth.
“I told the prosecutor, this guy is going to do this again and we better get him off the street before he does this to other people,” the guard insisted. “It could have been me.”
Mazariego was apprehended at swordpoint in Times Square on Tuesday night, just hours after the suspected assault outside the Jay Street MetroTech station in Brooklyn.
Records indicate he was released on $1,000 bail from a prior assault case in Manhattan before the alleged lethal attack in Brooklyn.
In addition to the summer assault, Mazariego reportedly has a lengthy criminal record, including charges for misdemeanors like fare evasion and graffiti.
The incident occurred late on June 24, with Mazariego accessing the theater by force. The security guard mentioned that while the glass door remained intact, he was struck shortly after stepping outside.
“You don’t need a Ph.D. in psychology to look at this guy and know he has a problem,” he noted, highlighting the troubling nature of Mazariego’s behavior.
Attempts to reach the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office and state court officials for commentary on the June incident were unsuccessful.
Meanwhile, Mazariego’s legal representative did not provide any comments in response to inquiries.
