In the final debate of the New Jersey gubernatorial race, candidate Jack Ciattarelli and Rep. Mikie Sherrill (D-N.J.) exchanged sharp words, with Sherrill accusing Ciattarelli of murder. Meanwhile, Ciattarelli focused attention on Sherrill’s controversial investment history and her comments about Charlie Kirk after his death.
During the debate, which was moderated by local ABC 7, Ciattarelli was heard to exclaim, “It’s hopeless!” at one point.
The moderator, Bill Ritter, raised various topics affecting New Jersey residents, including the state’s struggling transportation system and a public education system in decline after Gov. Phil Murphy’s tenure. As the candidates shared their contrasting viewpoints, the atmosphere turned tense during discussions of their personal backgrounds. When asked about political violence from the left, Sherrill claimed to be opposed to it, prompting Ciattarelli to remind her of disparaging comments she made about Kirk shortly after his assassination last September.
Ciattarelli remarked on Sherrill’s contradictory statements, saying, “She missed 90 percent of the votes in Washington,” and criticized her absence during important joint appearances in New Jersey to honor Kirk’s life. He acknowledged her vote condemning the assassination but pointed out the inconsistency when she labeled Kirk a misogynist and racist afterwards.
“I respect others even when I disagree. I aim to uphold the integrity of my name,” Ciattarelli stated concerning his commitment to avoiding inflammatory remarks if elected.
Sherrill reiterated her criticism of Kirk, alleging he sought to eliminate women’s rights, which Ciattarelli countered by rejecting her accusations regarding his medical publishing firm. He referred to her claims as unfounded and noted her lack of concern for the border crisis under the Biden administration, which relates to the fentanyl epidemic.
Cattarelli took a jab at Sherrill’s past, mentioning her involvement in a cheating scandal at the Naval Academy that prevent her from walking at graduation, which she denied while firing back with her own severe allegations against him.
In addition, Ciattarelli pointed out that Sherrill had violated federal stock trading laws during her time on the House Armed Services Committee. Polling for the upcoming November gubernatorial election shows a tightly contested race. Although Ciattarelli is campaigning in traditionally Democratic areas, there are concerns among Democrats that Sherrill is not a strong candidate.
Emerging reports suggest that Sherrill’s campaign has struggled to communicate a clear economic message, similar to challenges faced by Kamala Harris in her previous campaign for the presidency.
This marks Ciattarelli’s second attempt for the governorship after losing in 2021. Current insights indicate a surprisingly close race with polls showing them within a few points of each other. Voter counting is set for November 4, with early voting already in progress.
