North Carolina Lawmaker Accused of Rape
A Democratic lawmaker in North Carolina is facing serious allegations of raping a teenager, leading to calls for his resignation from some party members.
On Wednesday, Congressman Cecil Brockman, aged 41, was arrested and charged in Guilford County with four offenses: two counts of statutory rape involving a child aged between 13 and 15, classified as Class B felonies, and two counts of indecency with a child, which are Class F felonies.
Court records indicate that on August 15, Brockman allegedly engaged in sexual acts with a 15-year-old victim and attempted to perform lewd acts on her. It’s worth noting that the gender of the alleged victim has not been disclosed.
Additionally, the court documents suggest that Brockman tried to reach out to the victim, allegedly attempting to locate her in a hospital to gather information about her whereabouts, which raised concerns about his use of his political position.
Brockman was denied bail following his arrest and is slated to return to court on the 2nd of next month.
A spokesperson for Brockman’s office chose not to comment regarding the case.
In the wake of the accusations, notable figures within the North Carolina Democratic Party have urged Brockman to step down. “Given the severity of these charges, it’s hard to see how he can continue to effectively represent his constituents,” the party remarked in a statement.
House Minority Leader Robert Reeves was somewhat reticent on the matter, mentioning that if the allegations are substantiated, Brockman would be removed from his position. He emphasized the importance of allowing the legal proceedings to unfold first.
The situation surrounding Brockman’s case starkly contrasts with the political tension in Virginia, where Democratic lawmakers are backing attorney general nominee Jay Jones, despite his previous controversial remarks about a Republican colleague and their family.
Recently, a 2022 text exchange surfaced between Jones and Republican Congresswoman Carrie Coyner, in which he made shocking comments, such as hypothetically wishing harm upon his political adversaries. He even indicated a desire to disrespect their graves.
While Jones did not dispute the authenticity of the messages, he first blamed his Republican opponent for the outrage that ensued. Soon after, he expressed his apologies to those affected, including the targeted individual.
The nature of Jones’s comments was so distasteful that even MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough suggested he might have to withdraw from the race, yet no major figures from the Virginia Democratic Party have called for his resignation thus far.
On a related note, gubernatorial candidate Abigail Spanberger condemned the remarks but stopped short of urging Jones to step away from his campaign. Interestingly, both her and Jones’s campaigns are reportedly planning joint events leading up to the elections.
Senator Tim Kaine commented on Jones’s situation, stating that such remarks are indefensible and go against everything he knows about Jones, leaving the decision in the hands of voters.
