Judge refuses to grant release for accused Palisades Fire starter Rinderknecht

The individual charged with igniting the deadly Palisades fire in Southern California will remain in custody without bail as he awaits trial. This decision was made by U.S. Magistrate Judge Nathan W. Hill, who cited concerns regarding 29-year-old Jonathan Rinderknecht’s mental health, unstable finances, and challenging family dynamics during a hearing in Orlando, Florida.

At the hearing, three of Rinderknecht’s siblings—two sisters and a brother—were present, and one sister reportedly became emotional after the ruling.

Rinderknecht was apprehended in Melbourne, Florida, the day before a press conference where federal officials announced the charges against him. He is accused of igniting the Lachman Fire on New Year’s Day, which later reignited as the Palisades Fire on January 7 due to strong winds.

Rinderknecht, identified as an Uber driver, was described as “agitated and angry” by passengers the night of the alleged incident, per a criminal complaint reviewed by Fox News. Authorities noted that he is a resident of the Palisades area and was familiar with the land. It is believed that the fire was started with an open flame right after he dropped off his passengers.

Uber confirmed that it collaborated with federal investigators to trace Rinderknecht’s movements on January 1 and mentioned that GPS data placed him near the site of the initial Lachman Fire.

Following the revelation of his involvement, Rinderknecht lost access to the Uber platform. An Uber spokesperson also mentioned that all drivers are required to pass a state-mandated background check and undergo annual retesting.
