Late-night host Jimmy Kimmel addressed comments he made following Charlie Kirk’s assassination, suggesting that critics deliberately misinterpreted his words. At a press conference, Kimmel stated, “I think it was intentionally, and I think maliciously, misrepresented,” speaking with Bloomberg’s Lucas Shaw.

He expressed that the situation was “very unfair to Disney’s bosses,” emphasizing that leadership was united in their intent to resolve it.

Reflecting on the controversy, Kimmel mentioned that he didn’t believe Kirk’s remarks after the shooting warranted a significant backlash. “I just saw it as a distortion by some right-wing media networks, and I wanted to correct it,” he explained.

Realizing there was trouble only when his show was taken off the air, Kimmel humorously remarked, “I thought, ‘Well, that’s unusual,'” which drew laughter from attendees. Despite the entertainment industry’s backlash over the show’s cancellation, he noted having productive discussions with Disney executives.

The day after Kirk’s assassination at Utah Valley University on September 10, Kimmel openly labeled the incident a “senseless murder” during his monologue. He remarked on the harsh reactions from both political sides, adding, “Some people are rooting for this, which I’ll never understand.”

Kimmel criticized political leaders for failing to unify the country. He pointed out that past presidents, like Obama and Biden, aimed to bring people together, while he felt President Trump did not take a similar approach, instead condemning Democratic rhetoric.

The following Monday, he indicated that his show experienced a significant drop in ratings, attributing this to attempts by some factions to downplay Kirk’s assassination for political gain.

Reports by various media outlets indicated that Kimmel faced backlash from conservative figures, including the chairman of the Federal Communications Commission, which played a role in ABC’s decision to suspend the show.

The president voiced his approval of the suspension and critiqued ABC for reversing it. “I can’t believe ABC Fake News gave Jimmy Kimmel his job back. The White House has been informed by ABC that his show has been canceled,” Trump stated. He questioned the reasoning behind retaining Kimmel, suggesting his audience and talent had diminished.
