Florida Man Linked to Palisades Fire Discusses Climate Change Online

MELBOURNE, Fla. — A Florida individual, Jonathan Rinderknecht, aged 29, is accused of igniting the Palisades fire that significantly affected Los Angeles. Interestingly, he frequently posted on social media regarding how global warming contributes to wildfires.

Rinderknecht’s Facebook activity included a plethora of posts about environmental doom, where he often mocked President Trump and called for a vegan lifestyle. He also shared an article from ProPublica titled “Climate change forces new Americans to migrate,” which featured a thumbnail picture of the ongoing wildfires in California.

I mean, it’s a bit ironic, right? The very thing he expressed concern about appears to connect to his alleged actions when he reportedly started a wildfire on January 1st by climbing a hill above Los Angeles. Prosecutors allege that this fire, not completely put out, reignited days later, ultimately burning around 24,000 acres, resulting in 12 fatalities, and damaging over 7,000 structures, leading to an estimated $150 billion in losses.

His Facebook posts varied widely—one included an image of a defeated Trump supporter in tears post-election; another was a link to a fundraising page for Harris and Biden. I noticed he even shared an alarming headline stating, “Sen. Kamala Harris says meat is destroying the planet.”

Moreover, other pieces he posted referenced significant ice loss from Antarctica and how shifting to plant-based diets could generate 19 million jobs in certain regions of Latin America and the Caribbean. There was even a post from August 2020 showing Joe Biden claiming Trump inherited a robust economy from President Obama but failed to manage it during the pandemic.

Interestingly, Rinderknecht’s Facebook page contained few personal images, the standout being one where he appeared wild-eyed, his face painted like a skull and looking, well, quite intense.

Prosecutors also noted his unsettling online activity involving AI-generated images depicting a city in flames with people fleeing. It’s kind of chilling, if you think about it.

At the time of the incident, Rinderknecht was residing in Los Angeles but quickly returned to his family home in Florida. He allegedly recorded the fire, notified authorities, and then returned to observe firefighters working to extinguish it.

Currently, Rinderknecht remains in custody without bail in Orlando.
