Declining Trust in Government Institutions
Rep. Barry Moore (R-Ala.) addressed the diminishing public confidence in government bodies and emphasized the importance of questioning official narratives during a recent event hosted by Breitbart News, aimed at enhancing public health and bolstering the economy.
At the “Improving Health, Strengthening the Economy” panel, organized by the American Beverage Association, Moore joined Dr. Christopher J. Bogart in a discussion moderated by Breitbart News Editor-in-Chief Alex Marlowe.
Moore pointed out that the COVID-19 pandemic, along with federal health mandates, has contributed to a significant erosion of trust. “I’m sure the public has a lot of questions about the vaccination mandate and how quickly it was pushed forward,” he noted, reflecting on the credibility issues facing the government.
He also recounted a conversation with Dr. Jordan Bourne from the MAHA committee, highlighting that the science remains unresolved. “He mentioned that when we questioned the research, officials often said, ‘We can’t prove it works, but we believe it works,'” Moore shared.
Moore revealed a personal story that fueled his skepticism towards the government’s pandemic response. “I had a son-in-law, an Army Ranger, who suffered a heart attack after getting the booster shot,” he explained. “He was in great shape, running five or six miles weekly, so we began to have doubts. This was supposed to be healthy and safe, yet it had a huge impact on our family.”
Discussing concerns about government health agencies, Moore mentioned a recent talk with Dr. Vaughn, who indicated that many bureaucrats have financial ties, receiving funding for research from specific universities. Moore suggested this reflects a narrative influenced by money rather than genuine community health.
He emphasized that misplaced trust isn’t limited to pandemic policies; he cited federal nutrition standards like the food pyramid as another example. “These guidelines seem to benefit the wheat and grain industry more than public health,” he remarked. “You know, cheese might not be that bad for us.”
Moore expressed the necessity for a “healthy distrust” of government to ensure accountability. “We should be questioning our government more,” he asserted. “The trust between key agencies like the FBI and the attorney general has dwindled, and some health officials are suggesting, ‘This is the way it is in America.'”
His statements echoed previous criticisms regarding the federal response to COVID-19. Earlier, the Alabama Republican Party condemned vaccine mandates for military personnel, referring to it as a “purge” of those unwilling to comply. Additionally, Moore had a role in a 2022 lawsuit contesting the federal mask mandate for air travel, claiming it lacked substance. He was also among Alabama Congress members who sought clarity from the Biden administration over restrictions on monoclonal antibody treatments, arguing that it placed vulnerable residents at risk.
During his remarks, Moore underscored the importance of independent examination of official narratives. “I think it’s crucial to question the government,” he stated. “I tend to lean right and, to be honest, I don’t always trust what the government claims.”
