Effects of Typhoon Halong to Bring Uncommonly Powerful Storm to US West Coast

Super Typhoon’s Impact on the U.S.

A powerful typhoon that recently struck Japan’s coastline is predicted to create significant weather changes across the Pacific, potentially leading to a week of intense weather in the western United States.

Interestingly, Tokyo itself was spared from Typhoon Halong, which is comparable to a hurricane and classified at Category 4. Meteorologists have indicated that the storm’s remnants could deliver heavy rain and snow to the West Coast, particularly California, in the upcoming days.

As the storm system makes its way toward the North Pacific, the rapidly moving jet stream is likely to pick up energy from Furlong, intensifying storms along its path. This phenomenon, sometimes referred to as the “return of typhoons,” can spread effects widely across the ocean.

Forecasters suggest that remnants of Typhoon Haron could result in hurricane-strength winds in Alaska’s Bering Sea this weekend. The U.S. National Weather Service (NWS) has mentioned that this situation resembles the impacts of Typhoon Mabok in 2022, which caused extensive damage in western California.

Meteorologists are currently assessing its possible implications for the U.S. West Coast. It seems that Furlong’s energy might push high pressure into Canada, which could bring subarctic air down into regions like Washington, Oregon, and California by early next week.

If this weather system coincides with colder air, Northern California could experience heavy rainfall, while the Sierra Nevada mountains might see several feet of snow from Monday through Wednesday.

Experts are also cautioning that recurring typhoons may complicate weather models, indicating that forecasts might change over the next few days. Reports suggest that if the storm nears the coast, areas such as the Bay Area could see some of the heaviest rainfall since the winter of 2024.
