Cleveland Browns’ Shedur Sanders Responds to Rex Ryan’s Criticism
Rookie quarterback Shedur Sanders of the Cleveland Browns addressed comments made by former NFL coach Rex Ryan during a recent ESPN segment. Ryan had criticized Sanders for what he viewed as a lack of effort and urgency regarding his role in the team.
In his remarks, Ryan said, “This guy folds his arms like this and says, ‘You could be the starting quarterback,’ get a front row seat, make the grade, study, do it all. If I know it, the whole league knows it. Stop embarrassing yourself.” He emphasized that while Sanders has the talent to succeed, he should strive harder to claim the quarterback position.
Responding to this criticism after a practice session, Sanders remarked, “He’s just trying to start something. We’re not going to have negativity going forward. We’re not doing that. I’m just here to be positive and not talk about the negative.” He seemed determined to focus on the future and suggested a shift away from negative discussions.
Sanders also touched on an incident from last week when he was asked about fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel being named the starting quarterback. His non-verbal response led to some speculation. “I don’t think everyone likes to be playful all the time,” he explained, adding that not all moments are suited for humor and that he needed to adapt his communication style.
With the Browns trading away veteran quarterback Joe Flacco, head coach Kevin Stefanski has yet to promote Sanders to the second-string position for the upcoming game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Stefanski has stated he would take his time deciding between Sanders and practice squad quarterback Bailey Zappe.
Reflecting on his overall situation, Sanders mentioned, “We can see the light at the end of the tunnel.” He expressed confidence in his mental capacity and appeared optimistic about his future role, saying, “Whatever my role is here, I’m grateful. I’m happy just to be able to do it.”
