Brooklyn Nets’ Rebuilding Season Begins
This season is shaping up to be a significant transitional phase for the Brooklyn Nets, characterized by a commitment to youth. Their first official game will take place in China on Friday. After securing a win against Hapoel Jerusalem in their initial preseason match, they will now face the Suns in Macau.
Team owner Joe Tsai candidly described their approach, stating, “We’re in a rebuilding year. We’ve invested heavily this summer, acquiring five first-round picks for the 2025 draft.” He emphasized the importance of aiming for a good pick in 2026, which hints at their strategy for the ongoing season. The team is notably young, with plans decidedly focused on development.
Winning the lottery is crucial for their rebuilding efforts. Rookies like Egor Demmin, Nolan Traore, Drake Powell, Ben Saraf, and Danny Wolf serve as the foundational pieces of this new roster. The Nets hold the title of the youngest team in the NBA, featuring three teenagers and 14 players under 24, which might make them one of the youngest in history.
Wolf, 21, highlighted the team’s mindset, saying, “We know what we’re playing for. It’s vital to prove ourselves, rather than worry about others’ opinions.” The learning curve for these youngsters kicks off against Phoenix, following a preseason opener that offered little competition.
Point Guard Situation
Last season, the veteran leadership of Dennis Schroder and D’Angelo Russell contributed to the Nets’ success. However, this go-around, the team is opting for untested rookie guards. Statistically, less experienced point guards have had mixed success in the lottery, yet there’s hope they can still develop effectively as they gain experience.
Player Updates
Demmin is sidelined due to a torn plantar fascia, and Saraf, drafted 26th overall, might start against the Suns, taking over for Traore. Traore is quick and defensively sound, but Saraf showed promise in the opener, leading with six assists and an eye-catching rating.
Currently, the Nets lack a seasoned point guard. Kobe Bufkin demonstrated capability against Jerusalem, but his role seems more suited to shooting guard. The team appears to view him as a bit small for a traditional point guard role.
Injury Report
Only two players, Demmin and Haywood Highsmith (who is recovering from knee surgery), are confirmed to play against the Suns, possibly allowing Powell to make his debut after missing earlier games due to a knee tendon injury.
Performance Insights
In the debut game, 14 players logged double-digit minutes, with everyone, except Wolf, rated positively. His performance saw some promise with five assists in limited time, but he’ll need to improve defensively as they face a more formidable Suns team.
Veteran Dynamics
Last season’s veterans, Schroder and Dorian Finney-Smith, played significant roles before being traded. Terrence Mann, with three years and a hefty contract remaining, likely won’t be moved. Highsmith, hopeful for an early return, is seen as both a trade asset and a potential risk to their losing strategy.
Additional Notes
As the team traveled to China, Michael Porter Jr. and Cam Thomas hadn’t seen much playing time yet. On a lighter note, they received a surprise visit from action superstar Jackie Chan shortly after their arrival.
