NFL’s Tush Push Sparks Controversy

When you can’t stop something, the usual advice is to vote against it. That seemed to be the case during the Eagles’ matchup against the Giants on Thursday night. In a tight first half, the Eagles executed a series of four consecutive tush pushes, which allowed them to cross into the end zone for a lead before ultimately losing 34-17.

Honestly, it wasn’t the most exciting thing to watch. The MetLife Stadium crowd let out a chorus of boos. Yet, it did the trick, helping the Eagles get a 17-13 lead through a run by Jalen Hurts, which pushed their record to 4-1. This was somewhat unsurprising since Hurts has led the league in rushing conversions on third or fourth-and-1 plays since 2022.

Interestingly, the Giants had been among the 22 teams that voted for banning the tush push back in May, but they fell just two votes short of the necessary 24 to make it official. So, it seems likely there will be another vote next spring. The NFL has stated that this play hasn’t resulted in a significant increase in injury rates, but many coaches advocating for its ban cite safety concerns, rather than just frustration with not being able to defend against it. For perspective, consider defensive tackle DJ Davidson, who experienced knee pain after engaging in scrums multiple times.

As the Eagles trailed 13-10 in the second quarter, they covered 68 yards with surprising ease, showcasing a 16-yard pass from AJ Brown on a crucial third-and-7. When it came down to a third-and-1 at the three-yard line, they went for their go-to play instead of trying something different with Brown or Saquon Barkley. They could have opted for a shovel pass to Dallas Goedert, which resulted in an earlier touchdown, but they stuck to the tush push.

So how did that play unfold? Here’s a brief rundown:

  1. Hurts initially found no ground as he was held back by Dexter Lawrence while Brian Burns leaped over the line.
  2. After a timeout for the Giants, Hurts aggressively pushed Goedert, making room to squeeze through for a two-yard gain and a first down.
  3. Next, Hurts faced strong resistance from Rakeem Nunez-Roches and Kayvon Thibodeau, but still managed to score, being flung to the ground as he crossed the line.

The ongoing debate within the league also focuses on whether the Eagles’ execution of the tush push involves a false start. Slow-motion replays seemed to suggest that might be the case during a critical fourth-down conversion, but officials claimed it was not evident in real-time.

Overall, the stark reality is that the Eagles, when given multiple chances in such situations, are incredibly hard to stop.
