Basketball Hall of Famer Charles Barkley has issued a warning to WNBA players who seem to be preparing for a potential labor dispute, especially as Commissioner Cathy Engelbert faces increasing scrutiny.
Napheesa Collier of the Minnesota Lynx added pressure on Engelbert during her last press conference of the season. She spoke about a perceived “lack of accountability” from the league office and claimed that Engelbert had made harsh remarks about up-and-coming talents Caitlin Clark and Paige Bueckers.
Collier was acknowledged by her peers for her leadership as the league approaches what could be a challenging collective bargaining situation. However, Barkley cautioned players to tread carefully. “They need to be very careful. They are walking on thin ice right now,” he remarked. He continued, underscoring the importance of not pushing too hard, drawing from his experiences in the NBA, where even stars like Larry Bird and Michael Jordan went on strike only a few times. “Just because you have the talent doesn’t mean the billionaire owners will give you everything you want.” He reflected on how players can feel the pressure of negotiations, stating, “It’s okay to overplay a hand occasionally, but you have to know when to stop.”
He also reminded listeners that, despite sizable incomes, players should remember their relative positions in negotiations. “Even if you make millions, you’re not a millionaire compared to them,” he warned, emphasizing the need to make wise decisions in order to maintain continued progress.
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has expressed hope for a resolution between the players and the WNBA but acknowledged that Engelbert’s rapport with the league requires mending.
“We’ll try to reach an agreement with the players,” he stated recently. “There’s still a lot of work ahead, but we are committed to finalizing a new collective agreement.”
