Republican attorneys general increase funding in Virginia following violent messages from Democratic nominees

Controversy Surrounds Virginia AG Candidate Jay Jones

In a recent discussion, Byron York from FOX News highlighted that Democrats are standing firmly by Virginia gubernatorial candidate Abigail Spanberger, who hasn’t retracted her support for Jay Jones despite the surrounding controversy.

On the financial front, a prominent Virginia campaign fundraising organization has significantly increased its backing for the state’s attorney general race following the surfacing of Jay Jones’ unsettling text messages characterized by violent rhetoric. This move suggests the scandal could have real consequences for his campaign.

The Republican Attorneys General Association (RAGA) recently committed an additional $2.5 million to Republican incumbent Jason Miyares, following an earlier investment of $2 million in the race earlier this week. This fresh funding boosts RAGA’s contributions to Miyares to an impressive total of $8.5 million.

According to spokesman Adam Piper, the controversy has rekindled donor interest, allowing for this surge in financial support.

Calls for Jay Jones’ Removal Grow

Piper noted that RAGA had been dedicated to Miyares from the outset, asserting that the text messages “completely changed” the race’s dynamics.

Interestingly, Miyares is currently doing well in the polls, and RAGA is reportedly receiving an influx of donations, which has enabled them to double their investment in Virginia. Piper remarked that the situation had shifted dramatically in just one week.

Polling data highlights that the association is outperforming other political committees involved in gubernatorial races. They’ve set a new record, surpassing the previous high of $7 million spent on an attorney general candidate back in 2017.

In a related twist, Jay Jones, currently a candidate for attorney general, is facing backlash for past text messages where he expressed violent thoughts towards political opponents. Following the revelation, RAGA released an internal poll indicating that Jones’s popularity has fallen by 21 points over the past month. Current polls show Miyares leading Jones by a narrow margin with just a month remaining until the elections.

Recent Polls and Jones’ Apology

While early voting is already in progress, the extent of the potential fallout from Jones’ messages on the Democratic candidates’ chances in traditionally blue states remains uncertain. Although Jones has issued an apology, he is still facing significant scrutiny.

Alongside new fundraising challenges, calls are mounting for Jones to exit the race amid increasing national anxiety surrounding political violence. Democrats, including Spanberger, have dismissed the documents but have stopped short of demanding Jones’s resignation.
