A far-left activist group known for its anti-ICE and anti-Israel demonstrations is planning events at college campuses next week. These gatherings are aimed at promoting disdain for Charlie Kirk while celebrating George Floyd instead.
A member of the University of Minnesota’s Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) chapter mentioned, “The federal government has declared October 14th, which is George Floyd’s birthday, as Charlie Kirk Day of Remembrance.” The statement was shared on Facebook.
They continued, “Instead of honoring white supremacist bigots, join us to celebrate George Floyd’s 51st birthday and inform UMN administrators that white supremacy won’t be accepted on our campus.” A flyer announcing the event included the phrase “Charlie Kirk’s True Legacy.”
The SDS has organized counter-protests recently, such as in July, when clashes erupted between its members and conservatives at a Turning Point USA event in Tampa Bay, Florida. An earlier protest linked to SDS also saw chaos when attendees started banging on windows and even setting off a fire alarm.
The Minnesota SDS’s website has not been updated since 2016, yet it describes the organization as a “progressive youth group” aiming to unite various political voices interested in education and activism.
In recent posts, the group has shared information on reporting ICE agents and commemorated what they termed a “genocide” in Palestine. They’ve reportedly organized demonstrations, including one dubbed “F—The Fourth,” on Independence Day.
A University of Minnesota representative clarified that SDS is “not affiliated with the university and this is not an official university event.” They pointed out that the university accommodates public access for gatherings within reasonable guidelines.
Since the assassination of Charlie Kirk last month, tensions at university campuses have escalated, with protests disrupting memorials for him. Notably, some professors have faced consequences for their comments regarding his death.
In September, the U.S. Senate unanimously passed a resolution recognizing October 14, 2025, as Kirk’s birthday as a national observance.
